What Is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image from within the body. A transducer delivers the sound waves to a specific area of the body to capture the image.

An ultrasound is a safe way to check on the development of babies while they are still in the womb. This allows the doctor to monitor the baby’s heartbeat and blood flow, as well as its general development.

Ultrasounds are extremely effective when used to diagnose conditions that involve the female reproductive organs. It is an effective tool for identifying cysts, tumors, and other abnormalities.

An ultrasound is a safe procedure. It does not cause pain and carries very little risk of side effects or adverse reactions. Your ultrasound tech has received extensive training and is able to perform accurate and useful images that are used during consultations.

What Types of Ultrasound Are Available?

There are several different ultrasounds that can be used for various reasons. Your doctor chooses the one that is right for you.

  • 3D Ultrasound – During a 3D ultrasound, a three-dimensional image is produced. A 3D ultrasound uses many two-dimensional images taken from different angles to produce a three-dimensional image.
  • Diagnostic ultrasound – A diagnostic ultrasound is used to diagnose health conditions that involve the female reproductive organs or other organs throughout the body. Most diagnostic ultrasounds are 2D or 3D, depending on what the doctor is trying to find.
  • Prenatal ultrasound – A prenatal ultrasound is used during pregnancy to check on the development and overall health of the baby.
  • Transabdominal ultrasound – A transabdominal ultrasound is performed through the abdominal wall. It is often used during pregnancy to get a better look at the baby.
  • Transvaginal ultrasound – A transvaginal ultrasound is performed through the vaginal wall. This type of ultrasound is commonly used to diagnose women’s health issues. This type of ultrasound normally produces 2D and 3D images, unless the doctor is looking for a different angle to view the baby.

Do I Need an Ultrasound?

More OB/GYN offices have ultrasound machines in their offices than ever before. One important reason for this is convenience, another is a necessity. Many women choose to have an ultrasound even though their pregnancy is going smoothly. Some want to know the gender of their baby, while others want peace of mind, knowing that their baby is healthy and developing properly.

An ultrasound is a common diagnostic that can be used throughout the pregnancy, although most are not requested until late in the second trimester. We perform all of our ultrasounds in-house instead of sending our patients to hospital imaging centers.

Ultrasounds offer doctors an opportunity to measure the size of the baby’s head as well as closely monitor its development. It is often used to reveal the baby’s gender as well. Our ultrasounds are performed in an ultrasound room with a trained radiologist nearby for your privacy.

Ultrasounds are used as diagnostic tools to evaluate female health issues by producing images of the reproductive organs. The images provide the doctor with valuable information they use to make an accurate diagnosis and create an effective treatment.

Ultrasounds are often used to accurately place IUDs to ensure that they function properly. By performing our ultrasounds in a private ultrasound studio, our radiology technician and other staff members assist the doctor in completing both the ultrasound and the IUD procedure.

Ultrasounds help doctors create effective fertility treatments by showing where problems exist. With this knowledge, they can create treatment plans that make pregnancy possible. We use our knowledge and experience to create prenatal miracles for our patients. Our goal is to help make having a baby an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
