Vaginal Discharge: What’s Normal and What’s Not

Vaginal discharge can be confusing, but it’s a normal and important part of your reproductive health. So how do you know when discharge is healthy—and when it might signal a problem? This blog breaks down the types of vaginal discharge, what’s considered normal, and when you should schedule an appointment.

What Is Normal Vaginal Discharge?

Healthy vaginal discharge helps clean the vagina and keep bacteria in check. It varies throughout your menstrual cycle:

  • Clear or white: Often normal and may increase during ovulation, pregnancy, or arousal.
  • Thin and stretchy: Common around ovulation (like egg whites).
  • Mild odor: Natural vaginal scent, not strong or foul.

Signs of Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Watch for changes in:

  • Color: Yellow, green, gray, or blood-tinged outside of your period
  • Texture: Thick, chunky, or frothy
  • Smell: Strong, fishy, or foul odors
  • Associated symptoms: Itching, burning, pain, or swelling

These signs could indicate infections such as:

  • Yeast infections (thick, white, cottage cheese-like)
  • Bacterial vaginosis (grayish, fishy odor)
  • STIs (unusual color or texture, pain, odor)

When to Call Your OB/GYN

If your discharge changes suddenly or is accompanied by discomfort, schedule a visit. It’s important to rule out infections or other conditions early.
